Fatherless to Father's Day

What is father's day?  If I was asked this question a few years ago I would I have answered "Father's day is no different than any other day so why worry about it." This statement was true, or I believed it to be true for the first  15 years of my life. Though things  have changed  very rapidly the past 4 years and I honestly can say I was wrong.

Father was a foreign word to me for most my life. I knew the dictionary definition  but I never knew what a father really was. Who could blame me since the only people in my life who I every had any type of connection to where female, this would be my grandmother, mother, and  little sister. With this being stated its already easy to assume that I disliked father's day.  What truly drove me to hate father's day would have been mandatory school assignments based on this useless day.  I loved to learn and participate in school events, unless it was the week leading to father's day. All the kids would stand up and talk about their fathers and make cards, which we ended up taking home. While all the kids would take their cards home and gift them to their dads I would tear up my pathetic A+ and place it in a very nice canister with other garbage.

Some years would passed and finally my mom seemed to have a gleam in her eyes and I could tell something was different. It took me a few months till I realized that she was dating someone. This date started living with us and though I was curious of what a father would be like I knew that this would need adjusting, and I honestly did not have time to adjust any further cause at this point I couldn't tell if I was going to speak in a high or low pitch. After contemplating many hours I decided to run test on this stranger. I would test this man for 6 months until I finally realized, "okay this guy is not too shabby."High school came around and I was still fatherless, but the day started showing promise. I actually had a male in the household whom I could have a conversation with. My junior year this guy asked for my approval to take my mom's hand in marriage and I replied " I would  be honored to have you as a father"

So what is father's day ? Well this year  it's a day to  congratulate a fantastic man for marrying an one of a kind woman and tell him with a smile " Its about damn time!" . Father's day has passed around 19 times but this year is the start of a new day. Instead of having a fatherless day I know have a father's day.
